CX500 GL500 650 Global

after reading a few horror stories about CX radiator fans shattering i wonder if there is anything that could be done to strenthen the standard fan? like beefing it up with fibreglass or a metal ring around the rear of the fan hub. When the fan gives up does it snap a blade or does the hub fly apart? Read the section on electric fan conversion and i could machine a collar to replace the fan hub to keep the camshaft oil seal in and use a countersunk bolt to hold it to gain better clearance for the electric fan. I don't really fancy re-drilling my radiator mounts to get the extra clearance and also am not confident to attack the wiring loom yet so that's why i thought about modifying the standard fan.

The fan explosion of the mechanical fans is pretty rare but as the bikes/parts get older it may occur more.If you use the Ninja fan you don't have to modify anything really as this guy attached it using special tie-wraps.

Another guy has used two Vantec Tornado PC cooling fans which are held on with standard tie wraps.These a re wired in parallel.

I'm sure you could reinforce the Stock fan some way.

Cheers again, seen an old fan to use some fibreglass on, a strip down each blade and then a few strips wrapped round the rear of the fan hub as i think there's a shoulder to stick it to, reinforcing the body. Gonna get the rad off tomorrow as i got some 2inx2inx10guage galvanised mesh to make a screen between the fan and rear of the radiator, if there is enough room i'll put another in and stagger the squares. Hold them in with some ali mig wire if i can drill some 2mm holes in the back of the rad. Check valves again with my new Teng feeler guage and adjust the cam chain. My boss asked "why did'nt you get a new bike?" I replied " because you can't work on most new bikes, and old ones have soul!" they think i'm mad! Well all part of the learning experience.
