auto camchain tensioner

Hi

I'm working on a 400c which is a downsized 650c and I'm replacing cam chain, tensioner and blade. Do I also need to replace the automatic tensioner unit?? I just got the thing out in time- most of the spring showing and some metal chewed up. I thought I could perhaps just push the spring back in somehow but it doesn't seem to want to do that. Is there something I am missing here or am I up for a new one?

Thanks for help

As it's such an important part of the engine don't risk it.A new/good one will most likely do you for a good 50,000+ miles.
