If you have not already and when you get the chance have the front case off and clean the sump and the oil pump filter.This often gets overlooked and this can happen over time,

Shep, wow, that's a scary looking pump screen! Thanks for the reminder, I plan on swapping front covers this winter, I will be sure to do the cleaning you recommend. BTW - Do you know if the front covers interchange between CX and GL model engines? They look the same as far as I can tell.

I think the front covers are all the same on all CX/GL500 models

I can't remember if you make your own gaskets like I do?Way cheaper in the long run and better plus you don't have to wait for them or them get lost in the post.

I'm glad you asked because I plan on doing that. I forgot, what was the material thickness you use for the front cover and clutch covers?

In metric 0.8mm will do for all front and back gaskets.I have and used some 1.0mm and that's seems ok as well and of course more robust.I think it's 1/64" imperial

I bought a cheap set of leather punches off ebay.Metric or imperial will do.They make punching the holes out easy into a bit of lead.

No biggie, after reveiwing your recommendations on kingston's thread here, it sounds pretty simple.

I figure I'll tear it apart and have a look at things and go from there.

So what do you guys think a reasonable mileage figure is for clutch life? I know a lot depends on driving habit, but I mean for normal wear and tear by an average rider - not stunters or hot-dogs (Shep)

FWIW: My turd has about 46000 turns on it.

I think clutch life also depends on what brand and quality you buy. My after market clutch is waring out pretty fast, and I only have about 4000 miles on it. My ride to work is all stop and go though. My next one will be Honda to make sure i get the better life out of it.

I've been lucky with my clutches inasmuch as I've got loads of good spares off the cheap Ebay engines I've had but if I were to replace I think I'd go with EBC,

I have a pair of their brake pads on one of my CX and they are superb.I can tell the difference to the unknown pads on the other CX.

You do know that the front tire should be ON the ground at all times right?

Seriously, that clutch mileage sounds pretty bad, do you recall what brand it is? Would like to steer clear of that one....
