hello everyone new to this forum. caught the link from chopper charles. look like almost everyone from there is on here. i'm almost done with my project 81 gl that is getting ratted into a hard tailed low bike. there is a ton of pictures on c.c. forum if anyone is at all interested. my screen name there is lowlife1220

Hi! I'm from Arizona also(Apache Junction).
A guy was moving, and he had his 81 GL500 on craigslist, I offered 500, and it was mine!

So, I have a project bike. I'm not going to be able to put a lot of money into it, but I want it to be as reliable as I can make it. The engine was black with oil and crud, and the fan was making a horrific sound. I've taken the fairing off, radiator, thermistat, and now waiting to go get a bolt to pull the fan off. The front of the fins are work/broken, and the back of the bottom of the radiator looks shiny, like the fins have been rubbing on it. Can't tell yet if the impellor was working, the radiator was full to the top, so I didn't see any fluid movement. The tank was sun faded down to almost bare metal. I did a 5 dollar Krylon paint job, and it actually looks quite nice(surprise, surprise).

I look forward to researching info on your site, and asking occasional questions, as I'm quite the novice at mechanical repairs.

Don't worry.There's not a lot I don't know about these bikes and along with other contributors and links we'll get it going good as cheap as possible

I cleaned her up, painted the tank, and covers etc. Tore the fan off, and put an eletric fan in. Starting to work on electrical. Flasher relay pops the 10amp fuse, so gotta figure out that one. It's noisy, so I need to figure out what is making the racket. It runs strong, but I think the valves need adjusting. Probably cam chain too, but one step at a time. I've never delved that deeply into repairs, so It's going to to be fun for me. I'll have to post a picture of my fan. Almost looks like it belongs there....Almost
