CX500 GL500 650 Global

I have a 1981 CX500 which with less the 10K miles. It is my 8th motorcycle I have owned and is my favorite and my last as I plan to keep it forever.

My problem is my charging system. The battery goes dead in about a week of riding around town. I put it on the charger and it is good for another week. Find myself push starting it a little to often as it gets a little embarrassing.

I changed out the voltage regulator a year ago with one off of eBay but it did not help.
The bike runs great at all speeds even when the battery is so low that the turn signals won’t operate.
Thinking that it was a weak alternator, I just ordered one on line, but after reading your posts, I think that maybe it is not the problem since if it was my bike would not run well.

Any ideas on how to trouble shoot and repair?

If the main charging coils have gone I'm afraid it's time for a new Stator.It's an engine out job but not that hard with help from here and and also on Chopper Charle's forum which is busier,

Thanks so much, this will help. Any good instruction on how to remove a engine. I am sure I can figure it out but any help is appreciated.

That is the wrong Stator for a CDI engine.It's for the Transistor Ignition engines.

The engines are pretty easy to remove.You need something to support it.I use a trolley jack with a plate on it.some people have even dropped them onto Skateboards

Place supper under engine.

Remove oil.
Disconnect battery
Disconnect Clutch cable.
Remove coolant.
ull over flow pipe off rad top and Remove Rad
Disconnect Tacho drive cable
Disconnect drive shaft.
Unplug the two wires under the tank from the oil and Temp sensors.
Unplug main connectors on the read mud guard for the CDI unit etc.
Disconnect Starter cable at solenoid.
Remove Front hanger
Remove rear hanger if fitted.
Disconnect carbs at the engine.
Disconnect Oil breather

Then manoeuvre engine forward and out at the same time pushing wiring harness through the carbs etc.Double check nothing is catching.
