Almost definitely the cam chain needs changing.Do NOT use the bike in it's present state.Drain oil and check for metal particles.If there are any copper flecks then the main bearing shells may have gone and taken the crank-shaft with it.

If there are none or only silver particles in the oil you may have caught it in time.If this is the case see this thread,

If it is just the cam-chain and all is well you will need also to remove the front engine cover and clean under the oil pump(Sump) and take the oil pump off and clean it's strainer.

Well, I hope I'm up to the task. I've downloaded the complete IO files, so I do have some documentation. Find the parts, find the time, and get it done. With helpful pointers from you all along the way!

There's plenty of help around from myself and Chopper Charle's forum so you will be fine.We have helped many people raise their game on these bikes thus saving them money and being held ransom by sometimes overpriced and not very good motorcycle shops.

A little progress. Got the flashers working. Followed the schematics, and was trying to find out why there was a constant ground on the green wire. Took the fairing off, took the front wire cover off the frame, and then took the handlebar switch assembly apart. That was fun trying to remember how to put back together! LOL! Noticed on the slider switch that there was a light grey wire. Hmmmm. There's a third wire near the flasher that is Grey. Hmmm. What if I "???? Well, the schematic was wrong, it was the light grey wire instead off the green. Put my new flasher relay in, and shorted my scewdriver across the slider connections. Wow, it flashed! Put it all back togehter, after some head scratching, and it still worked, almost right. When I turned the flasher on, the tail lights stopped working. Son of a ****, you wancker! Got up this morning, and noticed I hadn't reconnected the wires to the clutch. Put them on, and Viola! It worked.

Good news.Keep going.The bikes are worth it.I've probably spent a couple of grand over 6 years including the cost of the CXs I have but because of all the basket case engines and boxes of bits I've bought off Ebay I haven't really paid out much in the last 3 years but I knew I liked the bikes so built up my own spares stock pile.Cheap enough to do and pays dividends in the long run.
Honda made a,"Home Mechanics" dream machine with the CX/GL bikes IMHO.I sometimes put a low bid in on stuff just to see if I get it even if I don't need it at the time.It can always be recycled<sic>

The electric fan was a little low, so I had to raise it up so that the front fender didn't rub it during breaking.

Got all the lights working. Changed the oil and filter, drained the rear hub and refilled it, and drained the forks and filled them. Bled the brake line, and refilled it.

Used the mightvac for both the brakes and the forks. Sucked the oil(Nasty) out of the forks, and then used the hoses and adaptors from the the mighty vac to refill them. Worked like a champ.

Looking at the Trail Tech Vapor to replace the non working speedo, tach, and temp. Any comments on the Vapor, good or bad?
