CX500 GL500 650 Global

Right.Some while ago I read a page on the net where a guy said removing the Air filter gave him more MPG.Hmmmm.....

I've been meaning to test this so I've removed the air filter from one of my CX but just to help stop any cra*p can get in I've done this,



It's a piece of Tac-rag(Used in painting for wiping dust off the job) put over the Airfilter Top insert.Combined with the gauze filter in the airbox I'm happy to run the bike like this.Could use a bit of nylon stocking or similar as a filter)

Going to check it over the next couple of weeks and see

One of the things that makes me believe the air standard filters are a bit over-the-top is that people who have fitted,"Pod" filters don't worry and the pod's filters are nearly completely,"Air flow Transparent".

will most likely have to adjust mixture as well.

Reg Worth has made his own air filter from an old and a pair of tights, he says it works fine.

If it was that simple we would all have a pair of pantyhose in our toolbox. I keep wanting to get rid of the airbox and throw some pods on but I don't want to deal with the hassle of trying to straighten out the re jet mess again.

From what I've seen people start saying,"Re-jet" before they have tested things.These bikes/carbs are very forgiving.I may be wrong but will keep you updated on my experiment.

For the GL, fitting them between or past the seat posts is the only real issue as far as I'm concerned. From a mileage stand point, I must confess, I have yet to even make a record of mileage. I'm still giddy with the idea of getting anything over 40 mpg, beyond that it don't mean squat to me right now.

I'm on your side with this though, I think Sheppola's tests will indeed reveal an improvement in MPG but considering the potential costs of 'dirtier' air it's not worth it too me. I can't help but think beyond the fact that 'dirtier' air not only goes straight into in the engine, but this 'dirtier' air is also what goes through the air circuits of the carbs (emulsification). This is not a good prospect to me, as much as I love fiddling with carbs, I think I'd prefer to stay away from that - go ahead, call me a wuss

Anyway aren't you going to fit Pod filters?If you check their filtering it's no way as fine as a standard filter so you will be in effect doing what I'm doing anyway so welcome to ,"Dirty Air"

You're right, night and day filtering ability from OEM to pods - yuk - yuk!!

I really wouldn't worry about it.As per my other posts there's little or no chance of anything getting into the internals of the carbs I think otherwise all the bikes in the world with Pods filters would be in trouble?
Also I've got a pair now but am not fitting them yet as I don't want to leave the empty space where the Airbox goes.Thinking about making some kind of bracket and hacking my side-cans so I can have the pod filters on but also keep the side panels and utilize the space behind then for something.

Something else that crossed my mind is that the whole weight of the carbs will now be taken by the Carbs and the boots as they won't be supported at the back?

I though of that too, seems like a lot of weight hanging on the already suspect manifolds without the air box for support. When I did the pod swap, I actually considered mounting some type of flexible support for the carbs - kinda like the rubber band type of exhaust hangers you see on cars. Got too lazy though.

I'm working on the bike I might fit them to as we speak and had a thought.Very easy to make a band that goes over the Frame and down to the Screws on the top back bracket on the carbs?Could be a leather strip or thin alloy strip.Won't be seen either if it's attached to the inner most two screws?It would just add that bit of support that's been lost from the airbox?
