All new cables!

Postby Jayinsac » Tue Apr 21, 2009 4:14 pm

A couple of weeks ago I tried to install some new handlebars on my bike that I bought. ( http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=&store=&catId=&productId=p594173&leafCatId=&mmyId= )

They are a little shorter, and don't have so much of a "pullback" as the original handlebars my CX500C had. Given this, when I mounted them and put all the controls back on, I had a lot of slack in all of my cables. No matter how much I tinkered around with it, I could not get the throttle control to snap back on its own. So, I figured that maybe the cables I had were really old and binding up a bit on the insides. I ordered all new cables, including throttle cables, clutch, speedometer, and tach. Boy, the tachometer cable gave me fits! I do not have a fan puller, so I went to the hardware store and bought a 12-inch long phillips screwdriver, which let me reach the tachometer set screw from way down near the right hand exhaust pipe.

To make a long story short, I got all the cables changed, and mounted my new handlebars. I am happy to say, the throttle snaps back safely on its own again. I'm also happy that I replaced the speedo and tach cables, since the tach cable was broken anyway, and the speedo needle always had a "bounce" to it. The only sad thing to report is the right chrome endcap to my fancy new grips I installed fell off on my test ride. But, I think I am going to have to take the other one off anyway, and install a set of bar-end mirrors. Since my new handlebars are a little narrower, the stock mirrors only relect my elbows. :x Have any of you seen any bar-end mirrors online that mount in, and curve upwards a bit?
