My main CX reads 14.3v:Lights off and 14.6v lights on @ idle.I've been led to believe that when the lights are of only one bank of the Stator coils is in use and when switching the lights on the other two banks come into play.I cannot find where it states this in the manual but it would make sense of your readings that one or more banks of the Stator coils are weak.
It could also be a bad ground connection or other bad connection or a bad battery?
12v auto/motorcycle batteries are a misnomer. They actually have a voltage range and for a,"12v" battery to be kept charged the Voltage should really be above 14v.As the battery starts to approach it's full,"Potential/Charge" it's internal resistance increases and the voltage across it will drop a little with the bike running but yours appear to be out-of-spec.
Note:The TAI engine used in the GLs and the 650s are different. They use the three banks all the time as they are wired to have the lights on all the time,at least in the US and have a different Stator arrangement.
Hi Shep,
You may recall we had this conversation late last year when you coached me in the art of using a multimeter, I performed the tests you suggested and the consensus of opinion was that the lighting coils are at fault. This involves removing the engine which holds no fears for me as I did it in a previous life to change the mechanical seal in the water pump, although all those years ago I didn't have the facilities I have now. I'm not sure if the coils can be rewound or if it has to be a complete replacement stator. I also understand there are some ignition coils in there as well, although she starts up fine, in fact it does everything it should bar charge the battery with the lights on so I consider it well worth doing.
