CX500 GL500 650 Global

I finally know what your talking about with the 7 volt regulator position. I was lucky enough to be given a gauge cluster off a 78 and was surprised to find the regulator screwed to the back of the temp gauge. Isn't that a pain to get to.

Yep.It's not a good place to put it really but then they don't go often IME.

Well I hacked something together and put over 1000 miles on it this week (thanks, Amish Rally!). I ended up using a 7805 and green LED as follows:

Black wire (12-15V supply) -> 7805 pin 1 (IN)
Green wire (ground) -> cathode Green LED anode -> 7805 pin 2 (GND)
Yellow wire (7V output) -> 7805 pin 3 (OUT)

I didn't give a shit about using the original case, and having more room enabled a bigger heatsink, and there seemed to be a bunch of space in the headlight assembly anyway. I looked for an enclosure about the right size, and before long raided my bicycle tools for a patch kit box:



I got sick of soldering and resoldering the stock wires, so I said "screw it" and busted out the wire nuts.

It worked ok tho'?

it works great.

Boy, I love a good hack and this one looks like a real winner. Maybe this one is a candidate for posting in the customizing section too?

BTW, on the CX, is the HONDA crossbar pictured on the forks some type of OEM fork brace?

That looks like the standard "Custom" Honda name plate, just painted black with no chrome. I doubt it's a fork brace - as mine is made of plastic.

Yep it's just cosmetic.

Also Kudos to the,"Bodge"(Hack).I think you are like me.I'm not too fussy about the looks of something if i can get it to work and on-the-cheap

I always put myself in the place of some CX/GL owners who don't have the priveledge of living in countries like we do where we can usually get parts.There were two guys I helped a couple of years ago,one in Peutro Rico(Only CX on the Island AFAIK) and one in South Africa.Chances of them getting spares was remote and or expensive so Improvisation is the,"Watch word".

Being able to think,"Outside the box" as they say these days is just another term for using one's imagination and the Human ability to think,"Hmmmm.I wonder if.....".

I love,"Bodging" as we call it over here.Some of my Bodges have lasted longer than the vehicles!!

Years ago when I played in bands we got a Rad leak in the Van.Days before Cell phones/Mobiles so had to ask to use a phone at a nearby house.Older guy said OK but 1st put the white of an egg in the Rad,top up and run a few mins and it should bung the small leak.
Well it did and it stayed leak-free till the Van got scrapped some years down the line

Hope you never sell your bike because the sorry sob that goes looking for a new patch kit is going to get his ass laughed out the door. I put my 7v in the headlight too. Why not if there's enough room.

Well, I thank you Blindstitch2002 for the picture of the 7V position - on the guage cluster back-side. I had mine just inside the Chrome headlight case, sort of flopping around. Today I had it back apart, and noticed that tab that the rubber just sort of slides onto. Much appreciated.
