Glad to hear another one saved. Congrats!!!! Since they aren't making any more of these, we need to save the ones we can.

Good job CXmaniac. Glad to see every ones posting helped you get her running.
You would be surprised what kind of condition I see some of these carbs come to me in.
Thanks to Shep for the opportunity to find the help you found on this forum.
Keep up the restoration. As was said, we need to save all we can.

cxmaniac wrote:Thanks guys ;) Its great to be back on the road and on a cx is a bonus :D :D I did have a spot of carb trouble yesterday, the lh carb kept flooding so i guessed the float wasn't seating propery so i tried to take the bowl of but of course the inner screw was rounded, well nothing else for it they would have to come off. When i got them off the lh carb was in a hell of a state, the butterfly was as rusty as an anchor :o ,as luck would have it i had a spare set of carbs that looked serviceable. When i took the bowls off one float was at or about 15.5mm but the other was about 18 :o :o This did not fill me with much confidence that they would work very well, you could tell that they had been apart and by the state of the float heights by someone who did'nt have alot of a clue what they were doing, don't get me wrong i'm no mechanic but after an hour of reading up on the carbs i set to work, the carb section on this forum is fantastic, even a kak handed fool like my self can understand it :D Anyway carbs cleaned and fiddled with on they went and to my complete suprise she fired straight up an ran like a good un :D :D :D Sorry to ramble on,Regards Sean...........

This is why I gave the carbs separate section as their correct cleaning and setting up pay dividends in correct performance and saving in fuel economy. Most carbs on these bikes will most likely never have been touched in over 25 years! However once correctly serviced and setup they may not need looking at for another 25 years<grin>

Well done that man.

I was going to have my 500 back on the road today but can't get the new tyres to seal. At least she is MOTed and insured so once I get to a place with a bigger compressor than the one I have (I can't get air in faster than it comes out), I can pay my blood money to the state and at last have a bike back on the road. Only been bike-less for 2 months.

Happy New Year everyone.
Dave.

Have you tried putting a strap around the tyre when you blow it up,somethimes helps to pop it on to the rim.

Get a piece of strong rope like a tow rope or similar and a bar.Circle the tyre with the rope and twist it with the bar like a tourniquet and then apply the air.I used to be a tyre fitter many years ago and this is a trick we learnt when a Tyre wouldn't bed right even with high pressure air.

Try one of the tie down straps with the ratchet on it. Those work real well too. Less effort in the long run.

Done the ratchet strap trick, snapped it :-(
Had the tyres by a radiator for a week to keep the rubber soft and tried again. Still no good.

Will stop off at tyre shop that does lorries, maybe they can get air in faster that it comes out.

Not exactly riding weather here at the moment, it's darned cold and even colder than usual - our central heating has failed:-(
