CX500 GL500 650 Global

I started to change the oil in my GL500 today and noticed when I got the filter off that there was a spring, but alas no washer. Do I have to spend $3.00 at honda for one or can I find a washer at home depot or something that will work? Will steel work or would stainless be better. I don't know what the original was/is. I hate the PO, what a dipwad. How do you loose the washer and booger up the bolt head. Hell the bolt from Honda is $36.00.

Anyone you can find that will fit into the recess on top of the Rubber seal part ofthe filter.I got one that had the right diameter but the centre hole was too small for the bolt so reamed it out with a Rat tailed file.Got if from a DIY superstore/Hardware store.

Thanks Shep. What about the bolt? Just order one from Ebay or can the bolt head be replaced? I thought I read somewhere that it could be replaced, but wasn't sure.

Here is a oil filter bolt that is on Ebay. I just bought one for the next service of the filter. It's a good idea any way because the springs get weak with the years of service.

Thanks guys. I was wondering what that spring in the bolt was for anyway. Will order one from Ebay for the next oil change, just can't believe the shipping costs on a stinking bolt.

Worth a bid IMHO.Keep checking from time to time to get a bargain if you don't go for this one.I sometimes but in low bids on stuff on Ebay and if i win I win but don't up the bid.Got a CDI box for £10/$20 and a working Stator with pulsars for £15/$30 coz no one wanted them at time

Can always be recycled on Ebay later if not needed

The spring inside the bolt allows for oil filter bypass in the event the filter becomes plugged.

Got a fender washer and opened the hole up with a dremel after drilling as big as I had bits for. Fits nice and snug against the filter. I ended up using a 1 1/4" with a 1/4" hole fender washer. Didn't take more than 15 minutes and now I shouldn't have any oil issues. Thanks for the help guys. One more little problem on the finished list.

That washer should move freely with the spring as the only thing restricting it, pushing against the filter. When the filter gets used up, and nearly clogged, it should be able to push against the washer, allowing the oil to then continue to circulate.
