FYI - It would be closer 400 degrees -YIKES!

I'll throw an old junk carb in the oven at 400 degrees. How long do you leave them in?

There are felt seals around the throttle shafts and chock shafts that might burn up. Also, at that temperature, you might loose the spring tensions. I'm with Shep, I'm not to keen on the idea either.

That puts a whole new spin on things! DEFINITELY not a good idea to powder coat!

I didn't realize that throttle shafts/springs etc. stayed in when you do full-on overhaul - sorry!

Safe to assume that worn shaft bushings and related vacuum leaking or throttle binding is not an issue with these carbs?

I have not found any yet that were so bad they caused a large vacuum leak.

The shafts can be taken out if there is a problem, but I try not to if I don't need to. It can take a lot of PITA time to get the throttle plates realigned to the correct positions.

So, what your saying is that you don't yank the shaft? (sorry couldn't resist)

Anyway, took carbs apart today and as you suggested, there was schegma in one of the bowls and the idle jets were SCARY! I think they'll get the vinegar soak until parts show up.

You mentioned the plastic rings under the vac pistons, stating that the lip should go up. Both of these were inverted, the lip was against carb body I will flip on reassembly.

Also, I could not get the primary emulsion tubes to budge. I'm deafly afraid of not getting these and idle jets out! hopefully vinegar soak will hep.

BTW - Pleas take a look at my 'Carb venting" post at CC's when you get a chance. And did you catch the post near here about powder coating bowls/caps for you? Any interest?

Rather than risk damaging the carbs I'd leave them to soak as you say and then if you have access to a high pressure air-line blow them through.I don't so i take mine down to a local small bike shop where I get my Road worthiness certificates done and they let me use their airline and fine air nozzle blower
If this is not possible I use my Car,"Power Washer" and trust me with the deteregent bottle attachment that really does blow them trhough after a soaking in Vinegar

Funny, reminder about air...
About 8 years ago during a remodeling project, I put an under ground feeder pipe in that connects my garage foundation to the house foundation. This 2 1/2 pipe allowed me run cables and such (telly, intercom, water, etc) back and forth, well that's what I told the old lady anyway, heh, heh. Needless to say, a few years later when I finally got around to running an air hose through, the old girl almost crapped herself when she heard the inaugural in-house air blast!! She thought a gas line or something blew down in the basement HAH! The whole concept of having a full-on hobby shop in the basement did not go over too well, so now, as a compromise, I limit the use (abuse) to winter time only to save dough on heating the garage.

GL, To get those emulsion tube out, I had to grind down a good screw driver so that it fit into the hole, and filed the tip so that it fit the slot inside VERY tightly. make sure you round off the edge around the shaft so it does not mess up the threads inside. It takes pressure pushing down while you get it to start turning so the little brass edges dont get rolled over. If you have an old tube out, make the screw driver fit the slot with that to get the right sized fit. The tip will be a bit thicker than useual.

I could check out the bowls and tops, but I polish the ones I use or rebuild. What colors do you have?

Well, closer inspection with a magnifier and pen light reveals some damage to the primary jet emulsion tubes - perhaps I made it worse by trying, but I was rather easy on them since I'm so paranoid. That and some nasty looking gasket goo (Hylomar?) in some areas of the bowl flange - looks like a PO tried to 'seal' the bowl gaskets with the stuff - not good. Anyway, I'm pretty sure at this point there's no turning back and these will need to go all the way (surprise! - DUH!).

Anyway, as suggested, I'll quit while I'm ahead (??) and start the vinegar soak today, and go from there.

POWDER COLORS: I have a lot of colors and textures including multi stage candies (but of course, their tricky - still getting used to the process).
Many colors are high gloss but high gloss clear can usually be added (not needed though > aside from sheen, it only adds film thickness).

I will did up my sample ring and take some pics - may want to send to private email for best image quality - you decide.

Still waiting for carb kits from local shop, getting anxious. Should have probably ordered online, but hoping to start a relationship with this local shop, dang!

Anyway, I managed to score not one, but two crock pots for the garage,
one small one (about a quart) that is not temp adjustable but goes about 180 degrees with white vinegar _ perfect for the little bits
one standard size (3 - 4qt?) that just barely holds both carb bodies. It has two settings, low/high and after about 4 hours on low, temp is steady at 160 degrees F. Still some grime on them though. So I pulled them out and scrubbed them good with degreaser (should have done this first !!) then put them back in.

What do you think about turning up the crock pot to hi (max) to get a boil going? IF so, for how long?
