CX500 GL500 650 Global

This winter I will (hopefully) be taking my motor apart and replacing its innards. I know the cam chain needs replacing, as well as the tensioner and more than likely the guide blade on the opposite side. What other replacement parts should I order while I'm inside? I'll do the mech seal quick replacement as well, but other than gaskets are there any other wear items I should replace?

Nothing more that I can think of.Keep the tensioner and guides as they may still be in good condition.I have several from basket case engines that I cannot break by bending which tells be they are in pretty good shape.

Make sure you fit the engine sprocket that goes underneath the engine drive shaft the correct way round.I fitted it wrong on an engine build and it cracked the Right hand side Cylinder after just over a 1,000 miles ruining the block.

Apart from the mech seal, oil seal, waterway o-rings, chain and rear cover gasket I would wait and see what you find when you pop the cover off.

If you are having bother with the starter clutch, don't buy the spring, roller and sleeve set - it will either be the spring losing it's tension or the starter ring being ridged. Also, DON'T undo the screws on the back of the alternator, there is no need and you need to replace them if you do. To remove any ridges on the starter ring, use an oil stone, gently. Before reassembling, just tease the springs out until all 3 are the same length.

Next question (probably many, many more in the coming months): how to I make sure the oil ways are free and clear? I am doing everything on my own, so taking it to a shop is out, and I don't have an air compressor. I have the front cover and clutch out right now, along with the oil pump, and dont want to put the front back together until I know the oil passages are nice and clean.

The o-ring on the cam chain tensioner adjustment bolt should also be replaced at this time. They sometimes have a tendency to leak, especially if it's the original decades-old part.

It's cheap and easy to replace the o-ring with the rear engine cover removed; impossible otherwise.
