CX500 GL500 650 Global

Possibly coils failing when they get warm. I've seen this on the CDI CXs. I have no experience with the GL.

Is there a way to test them?

Check for leaks on both sides of the Carburettor.Spray a bit of Brake/carb cleaner whilst the bike is idling around the boots.If the engine speed changes then there's a leak.

How does that test the coils though? Wouldn't a leak show up all the time not just when it's warmed up? I will test for leaks though just to rule that out. Would a missing air filter cause any of this? PO didn't have one in there and I noticed it today when I took it out to check and clean. Big surpise when I opened it up and nothing there.

Sorry.It may be the coils.My test was for the carbs as it sounds a bit more carb related.Do a leak check to eliminate that.

I agree with you Shep, it sounds like carbs. I think the bike may have sat for a little while before I bought it which would gunk them up. I am going to check for leaks and order a carb kit. At least I can pull them and clean out the bowls and jets plus a balance until I get another set to tear down properly. I will check the shop manual for a coil test though just to rule them out. I have cleaned several grounds in an effort to rule that out as well.
It seems to need to be running a good 15-20 minutes before the problem happens. Below that everything is pretty good. Should it be turning 5k at 50-55mph? I haven't had the road space or courage to go above that yet.
Could it be the cam chain? The bike has 39K on it and I don't know anything about its history. I am going to find out what I can this week though.

bri-guy-ga, did you ever clean out the tank and the carb bowls as I suggested? I agree with the carb issue. The only thing that baffles me is that it runs fine for a while. Then it starts to run bad. It could be that the filter screen in the tank is so plugged up that it can not keep up with the demand for fuel. This would indicate a clogged filter screen inside the tank or a plugged fuel filter, if you have one. This could also have been compiled when you switched it to reserve at the gas station. The bottom of the screen might be so plugged that it could not deliver ANY fuel.

Go back to the basics and insure the fuel system is clean before you beat your brain up trying to find an electrical problem!

I didn't have the bowl gaskets to pull them off, as I figured they were not re-usable. Do you have to pull the carbs to do this? I will get them for next weekend since I won't be riding it again till I get tires and this fixed anyway. I will also pull the screen from the shut-off petcock and give it a cleaning, and do what I can with the tank. I don't know if there is a fuel filter on there or not, but will get one in anycase.

Hopefully things won't be to busy at home again next weekend that I can spend a few hours wrenching. That weekend before the first day of school can be hell.

You can pull the bowls off without worry of the bowl seals. They will stay on the groove if you don't mess with them, and can be reinstalled. A 90 degree angled Phillips driver will get to the center bolt to loosen it up. Then use a short screw driver or a 2 inch long adapter tip that goes in a 1/4 inch driver, to finish unscrewing the screws out of the bowls.

Well I pulled the tank and petcock assembly last night. Man what a mess the tank screen was in. It was covered in what looked like mud. It took quite a bit of work just to get the darn thing out of the tank. I cleaned it and the internal screen in the petcock good. Will work on the tank this weekend after I get some cleaning ingredients. Will also give the carbs a good look. I am gonna pull them just so I can get a good look at the bowls and jets. Here is a picture of it. Can't wait to see what the bowls look like.
