Front cover to clutch enclosure seal

Postby Walkin » Mon Jan 31, 2011 2:08 am

I have a question that I'm hoping someone here can answer. When I bought my bike last year and was checking it over for leaks and such one of the things I had to repair was a leaking front cover gasket. I replaced all the O rings I could see but one of the things that I couldn't get a hold of at the time was the half moon shaped rubber/neoprene seal that is located between the front cover itself and what appears to be the oil enclosure/bath for the clutch . It looked like the seal had been incorrectly placed at the factory and the top 1/3 of it was doubled and sitting loose instead of being seated properly onto the lip of the clutch enclosure. I couldn't make it hold in it's proper place because it had taken a set over all the years and didn't want to "glue" it in place with some hi-temp silicone or any other goop. I assume that it's purpose is to hold an oil level around the clutch plates. Do you see any potential problems if that enclosure is not kept totally filled or is there enough oil return flow that it shouldn't be an issue?

I honestly don't think there's an issue. Both mine were loose and I used some ,"Super Glue" to lock them in place but even if it's missing I doubt it's critical. There's more abuse to these engines by bad servicing regimes in their lives usually before people who care about them get them.
Just keep to pre-emptive oil and coolant changes and cam chain adjustments(Manual cam-chain) and replacement when required and tappets etc,

and the bike will do fine.

Note:Both my running engine's clutches are 2nd hand parts from different crapped out engines I got off Ebay and they still don't seem to wear much and if they did the clutch plate kits are not expensive and still available as are the springs.

If you can't find them where you are and if you ever need them then Wemoto are decently priced and ship Worldwide and a known reputable company that I have used for years,

Their service is Top-notch matched only in quality by David Silver's and John Oldfield or TAS and Georgefix in the USA.

Sounds good; these days I'm always thinking reliability when I'm putting in the time working on my vehicles, that's why I'm asking.
It's not to say that the thought of shaving off a few thousands off the heads/block doesn't still occur to me though.........

I hope you brought some of that "agua-ardente" back with you from your travels; it ages really well.
