CX500 GL500 650 Global

If you have to get some heat on it and it's a normal thread.There shouldn't be any play in the clutch when in-situ AFAIK.It sounds like the PO has done some bad spannermanship which is not unusual on some of the bikes.I had two engines off Ebay where the cam followers has been inserted the wrong way round.It's a subtle difference but and important one as it makes them wear incorrectly but the bike still run.

Finally got the locknut off and the clutch out. The 79 clutch was in pretty good shape, I sprayed and wiped it down but it came out looking good and all the plates seemed to move freely even before cleaning and smoothing. The 80 clutch I just took out looks rough in comparison. It's plates are much darker, and were stuck together in a mostly solid mass, they didn't move freely at all, and didn't seperate from each other. I don't know if this is normal or what this would have caused. The oil chain seems a little loose but definitely does not contact the clutch basket. I ran out of daylight and I've got trick O treaters coming by, so I had to stop for the day. I'm planning on putting the 79 clutch in tomorrow morning and going for a ride to see if I notice a difference in shifting and/or noise. Ok, Shep, gotta ask, what's AFAIK?

I boil my clutch plates with some washing up liquid just like I do with my brake pads.Then a final soaking with Brake/Carb cleaner and dry out with hair dryer

So after a complete cleaning and making sure all the pieces went back in the correct order, I get everything back together and start her up and it still makes some noise. It's a little bit quieter than before, but there's still some sound from the front and bottom. I did the screwdriver to the ear, and still sounds like a whir from the back, but in the front corner I hear the tapping the most. It changes pitch a little when the clutch is pulled in. I'm stumped, don't really know what to look at now and whether I should just ride it and accept the sound as normal or not. I did go on youtube and listen to every video I could find, and mine does sound better than most of the others, but I have never had the chance to hear a "normal" well running CX before in person. Shep, I've listened to your recording and mine definitely doesn't sound like the "whir"" yours does.

I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it became really loud.It may just be an age thing.One of my CX sometimes gets small clutch rattle which goes when the oil is warm.
