CX500 GL500 650 Global

Hi,all have a 1978 cx 500 with gl 500 engine in it.Having trouble starting it.New battery good spark,clean fuel.When I hit the start button makes effort 2 turn over then stalls then makes an effort again.Jumped it from car and started no problem.Drive it for a while qand sometimes it starts up again fine others the same old story.Im led to beleive there is a new rectefier been put in.Conan

Change the main fuse holder and fuse 1st as it's cheap and easy to do,

Then service the starter motor.It's not hard,

If the bike starts easier using some Carb/Brake cleaner or WD40 into the Carb intake via the Air filter then the carsb need a good cleaning as per,

Do the starter rebuild/mod. Easy to do and well worth it. The ground wire mod ensures the brush plate is well grounded. Night and day difference in starter speed and power.

Are you sure your new battery is good? Symptoms sound like a weak battery. Connections clean and tight?

The ground mod is an excellent one however if you cannot get the parts or are not confident then making sure there is no corrosion inside the Starter motors and bare all the metal where they are supposed to contact will work wonders as per my links.

I have 5 CX/GL500 Starter motors here,all serviced and all spin as if brand new.What I have found is that the carbon brushes are very robust and even the highest mileage starter I have(around 60,000 miles) they are only half way down

Have the cable to make the ground conversion where is the best place to connect it to will I run it from battery.The spade clip for opposite mounting isn`t big enough to mount to engine mountings(can get a biggrer one) if nowhere else to mount.Conan

You do not need to ground the wire to the battery and it's a waste of time and can cause more problems.

The outer casing of the starter goes to ground at the point where it's attached the two M6 bolts.Just make sure that flat surface is clean and bare along with the bracket surface.

Im talking about the ground from the battery to frame dosen`t look great ill leave it in place and put another 1 from battery to somewhere else.The starting motor has small orange sparks coming from it thinking its the bushes (as same happened on my drill).Will pull out starter and clean & inspect.Conan

Have starter out when taking it out I noticed a wire which has been insulated with yellow outer on it coming from back of headlight to near the battery not connected to anything has round type spade clip on it looked at wiring diagram on site cant find what it is any ideas.(could it be an earth).Conan

Before T take starter apart,how do I test it on a battery the big cable attached to it is the positive i take I hit that off the battery and nothing.With the new earth on the bike was turning over quite well but still wouldnt start.Checked spark again good fuel kep flowing from carb drain scerw when opende.When bike does start runs and drives great.
