CX500 GL500 650 Global

OK, I bought an 83 GL650i. I had to bypass the vaccuum petcock because it was leaking really bad. I got the bike running pretty well, took it around the block a few times. All of a sudden, it started sputtering and spitting, then all of a sudden it cleaned out and started billowing smoke out of the right tailpipe. Then I got it back home and smoke comes from both sides, as well as from where the mufflers attach. I checked the oil and it seems a bit thin. Has anyone else had this issue before, or does anyone have any idea what happened and what I should do to repair it??

I'm not big on some knowledge the 650s but when you bypassed the petcock did you do it this way?

It could just have been excess fuel gotten into the exhausts.If you think the oil is thin there's is a possibility some fuel got into it from a flooded carb so change it anyway.Just nip down to any supermarket that have 10w40 mineral oil or 15w40 made for diesel car engine oil and change the oil and take here for a run and get the engine hot if possible but if you suspect the problem still exists return home and don;t stress the engine until we find the fault.

I actually used that topic to tell me that I didn't have to relpace the petcock or rebuild it... I don't know what is the issue, but it seems to do it when it gets warmed up and is under load. It is not black somke... it is very much so white oil smoke.

Is it oil or coolant.Place you hand at the back of the exhaust/muffler when first starting and see if it's oil residue on the hand or moisture or fuel?

Oil would suggest things like worn rings/bores/valve stem guides or seals among other things.

Moisture would suggest head gasket/coolant problem.It may be none of these and could just be as stated so change the oil and see how you go.
