breakup on transition from idle to main jet

Postby Rsymonds » Sat May 15, 2010 11:14 pm

Newby here but not to bikes. I just picked up a 1980 custom with 9000 miles. The previous owner just went thru the carbs and got the bike running. It starts and idles fine and goes like a bat out of hell but the transition from idle causes some breakup. Without going completely thru the carbs again does anyone know what I should be on the lookout for?

Thanks

Welcome.I've seen you post on CC's as well.Np problem. The more sources the better.

The most common parts of the Keihin CV carbs that give trouble are the Float height/Float needle valves and getting them right,

and the slow speed/idle circuit.Unfortunately you cannot address either of these problems with the Carbs on the bike.

for the idle circuit Larry has his book published if you need an in-depth resource.I just remove the,"Black Bananas" as I call them in the tops of the carbs and then clear all 4 brass hole venturi(2 under the bananas) with a 0.14 to 0.30" guitar string and a white vinegar soak or CLR or similar dripped down them with a small pencil brush and left to dissolve the crud build-up.Then high pressure water blow(Car power washer) or air blow them through.I also use the 0.14" guitar string at the other end of them which is one before the throttle plate and one after and again blow them through. The larger hole in front of the throttle plate is from the idle mixture screw and that should be cleared/blown as well like the above.

Note:Vinegar will dissolve the metal of the Accelerator pump if they are those types of carbs so take this into account and only use as above and or on the primary and main jets.

I'm afraid there are no short-cuts on this one.
