CX500 GL500 650 Global

With all the little orofices in these carbs, it seems like it would be a good idea to put a fuel filter between the tank and the carbs. to prevent any junk that might be in the tank from plugging one of the tiny holes. Has anyone added a filter and if so, any problems?

The carbs should be high pressure air blown out after cleaning as well

Well I want to do this on my 79 but, have been hesitant about doing it..because I don't have a Carb sync tool.... is it required???

Not for decent rough estimate.When you have the carbs off the bike you can hold them up to a decent light and look through them from the Butterfly side,not the choke side.Then use the throttle mechanism to lift the plates.If you do it slowly you should see a glimmer of light start to shine though under the plates.

If they are close to balance the light will shine through both at the same time just as they start to lift.You can adjust the balance screw until you get them as close as you can.It can take a few goes and make sure all the linkages have been well oiled with penetrating oil after you have cleaned the carbs and you have flexed the throttle mechanism loads so you know everything is moving freely.

Don't forget before you put the carbs on the last job should be setting the correct float heights

this is as important as any other part of servicing the carbs.Incorrect float heights can cause single cylinder firing,flooded carbs,bad fuel consumption,bad or none starting.

Use a hair dryer to really warm the boots up.This will help make the Synthetic rubber softer.Then you can fix them up as well,

If they are really bad some people have used a piece of inner tube cut-to -fit over them but I've found most splits can done as per the link if they have not gone all the way through

not sure if I have seen it before -
currently cleaning 3 sets of carbs - (yes there are carb parts everywhere )

Getting the Idle jet out was a real pain on some of these - especially as I was unable to
locate a suitable sized easy out in the time frame - I know where to get one - i just cant get to it in the hours its open !

So I used a 8G particle board screw - square drive head driven by the appropriate bit in a 1/4 inch socket driver.
Copious amounts of inox first and over a couple of days to try and get it in there.
Additional 1/2 to 1 hour in the oven at 100 degrees C first and then straight out of the oven,
another squirt of inox and then hit with the socket driver.

by using the square head - good amount of torque can be applied as well as some upward pull.


Needs to be used with caution - as the thread on the screw will bite into the brass quite hard and it might be necessary to dress
the end of the jet back to flat again with a small file.
