CX500 GL500 650 Global

Hello all. I am new to these forums and have a quick question about the choke spring on the carb body. I am the new owner of a 1978 cx500 which has been sitting for 20 years. The bike is in decent shape but carbs definitely needed a cleaning. After finding these forums and using my previous experience with 4cy cards I decided to jump in.

I split the carb bodys apart (not intentionally) and now having problems with realigning the springs for the choke. Any one have detaled instructions on these? Tips? Pictures? I have included a pic to help better explain:

Thanks. That helps a little. But I cannot see where the spring that came off needs to be reinstalled at.

I've deleted the post above and you have actually helped/reminded me as the carbs I used for the picture I serviced last year and left ready as a spare set but were missing the spring

Here's where it goes,




Remember that since you have had the carbs apart and if they are not the angled type on GL and certain other models slack off the securing brackets,place them on a glass flat surface and make sure the two carbs are level with each other.

Also don't be surprised if you have not got the carbs 100% 1st time.It can take a couple of goes.Also most common two faults that happen are air-leaks from the carb boots on re-fit and fuel coming from the overflow pipes underneath until the floats and float needle valves bed-in.Also be careful when re-fitting not to damage the large Carb boot to Engine O-ring.I secure them in place with a bit of RTV/Silicone Gasket sealer but only in the Carb side groove of the boot.Then wipe clean.

Nice picture. I thought that is where it went. I'm gonna give it a go right now and will let you know how it turns out. If all else fails, I just found a set from what I think is an '80 cx500 from a friend. Anyone know what year cx500 carbs will fit a 78? The ones he has for sale have the accel. pump, mine do not. His also has fuel line coming in in the rail, here is a pic: will they fit my 78? I may need to make sure the jets are proper size but I think they will fit.

I think they will fit.It's the GLs and the customs I think that have smaller or angled space between the two sides.

I appreciate the help this forum is a great referance. I'm gonna pick these up for 50usd. He says they were rebuilt and never installed.

Even if the didn't fit you would most likely get $75/$100+ for them if polished up on Ebay.No lose situation

Exactly my thoughts. I went and picked them up yesterday, and they fit fine. I dont think I have ever seen carbs this clean. For $50usd I think I got a good deal. I fit them last night, today I will install the new fuel line and filter.

Now I still have the old set as backup, or if anyone is interested I have rebuild kits for them too.
