Hi Forum Members :D :D
I'm a Newbe here from Canada "EH"
I'm hoping to pickup a 1982 GL500 in the next couple of weeks.
I presently own a 2001 Kawasaki Nomad 1500 but I'm very excited about getting this GL500. My girlfriend owns a 1980 CX500. I couldn't believe how nice these Honda's are to ride in town. I just had to get one. So that's what has brought me here.

You'll find that the CX/GL500s are a much underestimated motorcycle. They were innovative at their time of inception.Honda learnt many things from them that they used and still use in ther more modern motorcycles and they are soooo.... easy to work on.

Correctly set up they handle way better than people think.I have quite often ridden with some smaller Harley 883s and they cannot match a naked CX500 for handling and acceleration and power up to say 70 Mph which means for all smaller roads and legal limits I can blow them away. Then of course I still get better fuel mileage<grin> Not to mention the Classic CX phrase you will hear,"I used to have one of those".

On a personal note there's not a lot I don't know about these bikes as both my CXs have basically been reclaimed using spare or refurbished parts and both my present running engines have been re-built by me from the crank-shaft up.

One of the cheapest and best things you can do is to change the weak ATF fluid used in the Forks for heavy 20w Fork oil.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Motul-Fa ... veQ5fTools

which you may have around anyway. It totally changes the handling and feel of the bikes.Mine are so solid on corners/bends they remind me of my old Norton Dominator 88 which had the world famous ,"Wide-line Feather-bed" frame of yesteryear and to quote the old reviews of those bikes,"It's like cornering on rails".

Thank You So Much For The Information.

Winter is knocking at our door here now in Canada. I can't wait to try the fork oil up grade for next season. I swear I'm more excited about getting my soon to be GL500 and my girlfriends CX500 on the road next year then I am about my 1500 Kawasaki Nomad. :D :D

Guess I'll be putting that forkoil in before the new riding season comes around.
I picked it up the bike after driving 1153 miles / 1857 km, one border between Canada and the USA, and three state lines. Yah can you tell I wanted this bike? It only has 10,000 miles on it.
Any how I'm sure the previous owner must have over filled the shocks with to much air and blew the seals to the point it's like there's no seals at all.
Do you know if this much oil leaking would swell the brake pad material? He told me he put new brake pads on the bike but pads are in constant contact with the rotor so mush it's very hard to push the bike. The brake lever travel is nill, it's as hard as a rock. One more question, have you ever used progressive springs in your front forks and how did you like them? I might as well change the springs while I'm at it. They seem weak after all these years.

Thank You for any help or suggestions you may have
Mark from Canada

To decontaminate brake pads I boil them in a pan with a tablespoon of Washing soda or some washing up liquid and let them simmer for say half an hour.I do this regardless if I'm doing any major front end work like fork seals.

Tip:Use the old for seal on top of the new one to help drive them in without damaging them and coat the seal with fork oil to make them easier to slide in.Spring side towards the oil, letters towards you and careful when fitting the tubes so as not to damage the inner skirt.
