CX500 GL500 650 Global

I finally have fired up the brand new GL500 engine. It's first tick over and I got ignition. Everything looked fine.
After putting in brand new fuel, the engine struggled to life. Choke full out, throttle position - at rest. revving the
motor, and all things were go. Choke in - same full rpm performance. Not wanting to get over excited, I put the
toys and tools away for the next day.

Early the next morning. Same conditions - only this time, she just didn't want to wake up. I was almost at my batteries
end of days, when finally, I got her running at a really low idle - but running. Full choke, and revs fine. No choke, and revs
fine. Blasting around the block she runs good....

My frustration is why the hard starting? Ignition is good. Fuel is obviously there. Throttle response once it is running is great,
but just doesn't like to 'cold start'.

Any help would be appreciated.

Transplanted 1982 GL500 engine (brand new) into a CX500 Custom Frame and Carbs.

How long has the gl engine been unused? After sitting for a while sometimes it takes a while for them to be up and ready and reliable every second of the day. Any chance you had some moisture in the carbs. The only time mine doesn't fire right up is when it has sat for a week or more without riding.

The engine was a virgin. Never fired until yesterday. Completely sealed until installed in the past couple of weeks.

I did however find this in the "Official service manual" when I followed trouble shooting.
1. engine cranks (Check)
2. cranked (Check)
3. Fuel reaching carburetor (check - fuel in float bowls)
4. Sparks Jump (Check - plug out, and case touched to ground - sparks as starting attempted)
5. Compression Normal (Check - yup)
6. Engine fires - but soon stops (exactly)


Answers from manual:
1) Choke excessively open (yes, it was, but same symptom with it closed)
2) Carburetor pilot screw excessively closed (this is my guess, as I had disassembled and reassembled the carbs for complete cleaning)
3) Air leaking past manifold (checked - no leak)
4. Improper ignition timing (checked - not an issue, as the engine runs really good - once it's warm)

It then suggests pulling the plugs to see if they are wet - I'm guessing my next move is to do a complete carb set-up - including pilot, idle speed, and balancing the carbs. I will post my results after the weekend.

Once you disturb the carbs on any motor it can take a few goes to get them right.All motors tend to get used to running,"Their" way over time.As the 1st 1/4" of the throttlle from idle is governed by the idle screw adjustment and the idle circuit in the carbs I'd suspect that so click here,
