Remove Air filter and on UK Upright types remove the bottom plinth.

Squish some washing up liquid in there(I use an old Toilet brush) whilst boiling a kettle of water.Then remove the plugs from the drain pipes that should be at the front of the rear wheel below.Then keep pouring and squishing in the box until all the gunk flows out.Also you can use an old bit of wire coat hanger or stripped flux coated welding rod to shove up the pipes to ream them out.

Compressed Air-blow the Air filter out if possible.

Dry off with some toilet tissue/paper toweling and refit.Do this at least once a year.Pre-season is a good time whilst checking everything else.

did this today, and there was a layer of sludge like goo at the bottom of the box. and there was also what looked like a foam filter in the bottom, but when i went to take it out it desinterated. looked like it was just a layer of sand and crap that had mixed with the sludge....

Some people have owned these bikes for years and never ever looked in the Air-box correctly let alone clean them out

It all helps maintain full power and top Mpg

This time of year it's also worth cleaning/servicing as many electrical connectors as possible as it's often overlooked as a maintenance routine,
