its not the carb, its not the stator, what is it?

a little history: bike wouldn't rev past 4500rpms, so i cleaned the carbs, and checked for vacuum leaks. nothing helped. i put my carbs on a friends bike, and they worked perfectly and we tried his carbs on my bike and it didn't help. after hours of checking for vacuum leaks we (my friend and i) have determined there aren't any. so we checked the coils and the stator and that all checked out.

what we do know: it runs really rich. there is gas in the intake manifolds, and on the spark plugs. but it doesn't overflow into the air intake boots/air box. and it back fires black smoke out both side when reved up to 4500rpms.

what is wrong with the bike?

Am I correct that this and the other bike are CDI bikes?

If so 1st thing is swap CDI units.

It can also be a damaged High Voltage winding on the Stator that supplies the CDI unit. You say it's not the stator so what have you tested on the Stator?

i did both of these tests:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=30
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=521

and all of the ohms tested within range.

Damn!

Oooohh I hate these faults. They can be a bugger to pin down.I've just spent the best part of two weeks tracking down a charging/bad running problem for a M8's 1976 Triumph Bonneville. He's not as good as he thinks and the bike has not run correctly for around 6 years and he bought it none running correctly and paid too much, jerk, but he's me Bud so you know what it's like.PO had really F*cked around with the system.

Will give it some more thought.Any other things you can think of that may affect the problem try and think on them.

i was think maybe a valve issue. i have yet to check the valve height. maybe the valves aren't closing all the way, or god forbid cracked. i just remembered when i got the bike i checked the timing through the left side view port with a timing light, and besides getting covered in oil i remember it checked out. i'll give both of these a look tomorrow.

so i checked the voltage coming out of the pink and yellow wires on the CDI. they both read in about the same range of 400 volts. that might mean something to some one...

so i'm sorry, i have been reading my multimeter wrong, its an analog that you have to recalibrate the ohms when you use it. between the white and blue wires it reads 60ohms, when they say it should be minimum 77ohms.

Can you possibly get another CDI unit to swap and try?

if i can't find another CDI, would checking it with a timing light be just as good?
