CX500 GL500 650 Global

I have a curiosity question. Right now I have a cb360 speedometer sealed in a cx500 custom speedometer case. Do you think it is possible to cannibalize a 79-82 speedometer housing to put one from a 78 in it. or could you just remove the guts and transplant that way.

If I understand right, you want to put a standard or deluxe in the custom housing. NO. They are designed totally different on the outside, and wont look or mount the same. I have one of each bikes as you know. What speedometer would you really like to have? I have a couple different ones from each style?

WisconsinCx has a parts bike that he picked up recently. Pretty much looked like it had been thrashed but should have a working speedometer. I personally dislike the 78 speedometer headlight housing but I was willing to spend the time to modify it if possible to get it to fit in the custom housing Like I did the cb360 speedometer. It still works but bugs the hell out of me not to have a tripmeter. I learned that the ebay way wasn't the best after buying 4 speedometers that only lasted about a month each. Roughly $200 down the drain for one summer of having a working tripmeter. I have become a fan of the style that came on my custom. I saw a post on choppercharles where a guy found a universal speedometer with tripmeter in it but it was $90 + Shipping and I would have to buy the matching tach.

Right now I am trying to clean all the little things that are wrong or slightly not working on the bike. I was hoping to get a new used one next year but I think I am going to be putting that off. One of the biggest problems I have had over the years with the bike is that seat that caused my butt to go numb after about an hour of riding. I love my wide glide seat and it really helps. I actually feel bad when I don't get a chance to go for my daily ride.

If you have any of the speed-o's still sitting around, send them to me. I have a way of opening the custom styles and being able to clean and re tighten all the screws in them. As well as getting the lens clean.

Unfortunately when I was packing to move I was weighing the option of keeping them and then something went sower and I threw them away because my brother didn't want to keep them for me. All of them developed a bouncing needle. One even locked up solid and started screaming and even vibrated the 2 face screws out of it. I learned that if you took a hack saw (probably a better method but it worked) and cut the ring you could remove the 2 sections and clean the glass.
Then put it back together, put on the ring and crimp the edges. One of them I cannibalized and removed all the inner guts then cut the backing plate away and stuck the cb360 speedo in it. Almost didn't fit but I made it work. Slightly leaning to the left.

If a speedo dies like mine have can they be revived?

I have one out in the garage that I could take apart to see what could be done with it. I will let you know. I just looked at it and I shook out a few dead bugs out of it because the trip knob is gone. They probably made a nest in it. I'll let you know what I find when I get time to cut it apart.

Yep, cut it open and a wasp nest dropped out. It had been attached inside the working parts of the speed-o it self. It was easy to clean up inside, and freed up nicely with a little spray lube and blew it out to clean it all up. I have to come up with a trip knob before I can reassemble it though. When I do, I'll put a thin layer of silicon around the seal and under the cut band, clamp it with a hose clamp and let it sit over night. That holds it together very well and keeps it dry inside.

Excuse me - I haven´t been reading all entries very closely so have probably missed something.

Therefore it´s possible that my answer is irrelevant.

On German eBay there is right now a complete Deluxe / Custom instrument set. Not, as normal in Germany, kph but mph.

Probably this item will go rather cheap, mph isn´t what everybody wants in Europe (except UK, of course). ~ € 20, right now.

I'm watching a few on ebay over here and being frugal doing it. Not sure how much shipping would cost but I'm sure it's a significant increase. Thanks for the info though.
