Yes unfortunately it looks like an engine out job

If this is the case it's worth getting together a full service kit e.g changing the Cam-chain if required, new Water pump Engine side Oil seal(They tend to break on re-assembly because of age)
It's number 11 on here,
http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cx500a-1980e ... t/E12.htmlBut actually goes into the rear engine cover which you can see when you have the rear cover off.
and taking the front engine cover off so you can lock the engine easier. You can make a special tool or even do this,

and also check the oil pump chain and clean the sump underneath it and the Oil pump strainer.
You will need a rear engine cover gasket or make your own,
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=256The advantage of making your own is that you know you can get it right and also in the long run cheaper and doesn't get lost in the post.
You may also have to get an M6 heli-coil kit to tap and thread the hole for the Adjuster bolt.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Silverline-Helico ... 439eee04a3As this is the most common size used on these bikes it's well worth having one anyway.
I'm sorry that such a small thing can cause such a lot of work but that''s how it is especially if the engine/adjuster has been abused/overtightened in the past. They only have to be tightened decent hand tight to around 6/9 Ftlbs
