CX500 GL500 650 Global

I want to clean the engine real nice to make sure it isn't full of sludge and the pistons and valves are clean, is there a good way to do this? I've heard you can run diesel instead of oil, run the bike for 20 minutes or so, let it sit overnight, then drain it and put in oil... Would this take life from the motor being that it's running without oil? Also do you have to flush it out? I want it to run better and last longer, but if this is likely to reduce her life span I won't bother.....

With running engines it's dangerous to flush them as it can remove needed build ups around the big-end/main bearing shells.The safest way to clean and engine out is to use some of the cheapest 20w mineral oil from the supermarket.Run it for say 50 miles nice and hot,then dump and put fresh oil and filter in.Most of us now use 15w40 made for diesel car engines from the supermarket.It's cheap,better fro the engine/gearbox and is of a much higher spec than standard oil and even better fro our older bikes than Fully synthetic oils.
Changing the oil+filter between 3,000/4,000 miles will make the engines last a long long time

So the diesel car oil would be better than using some simple 20w50 motorcycle oil? I've always just used what the label on the swing arm says, but what Honda knew 30 yrs ago is different than what people know now
