Hello, Purchased a 1980 CX500D with 38,000 miles last month to convert to a Cafe Racer. Always liked Cafe Racer bikes and after seeing a CX500 Cafe Racer conversion last month, found this project bike in Charlotte NC on the following day for $375. The previous owner started to convert the bike and had it partially disassembled with Cafe style handlebars installed. It had been sitting in his garage for six years since last the last time he took the bike for a ride. Plans for the bike so far: Trim original seat pan, apply dense foam, shape foam as a Cafe Racer style and have new seat cover made Test run engine with new ignitech ignition received last week Replace exhaust system and rear shocks Replace timing chain and all associated parts Rebuild front shocks Install voltmeter & on/off switch for headlight Install new front brake master cylinder Install new brakes front/back Install new cables Install new water pump oil seal Remove engine & paint frame/fenders yellow & black Install new pod filters and rejet carbs Install new tires There are many things to do not mentioned above. Will be taking my time since I have another bike to ride with the good weather finally returning. Ride mostly in the North Carolina foothills and mountains with some other retired guys. ![]() ![]()

Going to try to copy the seat style on bikes #77 & #103 in special section. Trying to decide if I am working on the CX500 tomorrow or riding the Vstrom in the mountains. Temps should be in the 70s lower elevations and 60s higher elevations. Need to try out a new set of Conti Road Attacks in the twistys, will make up my mind in the morning! |
