mech seal woe

I had the engine down to replace the cam shaft on my '78 CX500. During reassemble I replaced the mechanical seal, which had been weeping somewhat.

Now every time the engine gets up to temperature, the coolant comes streaming out the weep hole.

Besides the obvious ... that I botched the job somehow ... what did I get wrong? If I replace it again, I sure don't want to repeat the mistake.

Did you make sure that the 10mm thrust washer was in place on the end of the cam shaft.Sometimes it's hard to see as age/rust melds it so you can;t see if there's one on there,

I painted one red here to show it.

Also the copper crush washer that is underneath the Dome nut that holds the impeller on must be in good condition as well?

I'll check on the thrust washer, but I know that the copper crush washer is missing from under the dome nut. It was lost when the impeller rusted to the water pump cover and caused the cam shaft to snap in the first place.

Do you believe that the lack of the crush washer is allowing the mechanical seal to stay open?

Hopefully it's an easy enough item to order.

The crush washer needs to be there otherwise the impeller does not press correctly against the spring loaded seal. You don't have to order it if you can find a plumber's suppliers in your Yellow pages as they should have one.The hole diameter of the washer is a Metric M6.If you can find a washer of a similar size you can take that as a pattern. They will most likely have an imperial equivalent if they don't have the metric.I know in the US Metric sizes are not as common as over here.Damn the French!!!<joke>
