Starter motor slips, but eventually starts

Hi everyone I'm a newbie here. I have been offered a CX650e for sale and only problem with bike is starter motor turns over excessively and does not seem to engage motor ie slipping. It may take up to 8 goes before engine catches. This is a brand new starter motor and Is any damage occurring to bike during this event? Any comments and how to rectify would be greatly appreciated or is this something major and should be wary of repair costs. I would like to go on extended rides in isolated areas of west australia and need a good reliable steed. Downgrading from a 1976 R100S (actually more like sidestepping)!
