CX500 GL500 650 Global

I took my GL500 out for its first fill-up tonight and it ran great until I got to the gas station, while waiting at idle it stalled. I think it ran out of gas so I switched to reserve and pulled to the pump. Filled it and headed for home. I noticed that it had a hard time reving past 4k and going over 45-50 mph. When I got home it just wouldn't idle and kept stalling. Whatcha think? How is that 4 gauge set from JC Whitney for syncing?

Other than that it was so cool finally driving on the open road feeling the wind. Can't wait to cruise the GA mountains with some friends from the MSF class.

Having to go on reserve may have allowed some crud to get through to the carbs
That's why myself and a lot of us have fitted cheap in-line fuel filters as an extra safeguard.

Good point. What size is the line from the tank to the carbs? Will the small lawnmower style ones work or should I get a motorcycle specific one?

Basically whatever works IMHO but I did buy bike specific ones with decent fuel pipe as well.Some of the fuel pipe you get from say Autozone places degrades very quickly.The 1 meter piece I bought is a special neoprene type that doesn't suffer from this.

Always checkout Ebay for stuff like this.You can most likley get come better quality pipe as well maybe from the same Guy/Internet shop.

I always try to get fuel hose from NAPA auto parts. The stuff is RIDICULOUSLY expensive but it's incredible stuff. I ask four fuel injection hose...

OK, so I go and install a fuel filter this weekend. How do I unclog the carbs so it runs right, or will it work its way out eventually?

Do I need to replace the fuel line or just cut it and put the filter inline? What size to I use 5/16" or 3/8" line?

You could try to drain the bowls with the drain screw and see if that helps. But you probably will at least have to pull the bowls off and the jets, and blow things out. While your at it, pull the tank and drain it. I would shake it around while holding it side ways so the crud settles on one side. Put a siphon hose in to the bottom and siphon as much junk out with the gas as you can. I put a paper towel in a funnel while it is draining to see how much junk comes out. Then pull the petcock and clean it out before filling back up after the filter and new line is put in service. It sounds like you don't have the screen inside on the pick up tubes.

I started it tonight and it idled fairly smooth at 1K. Will take for a drive tomorrow and see how it idles after that. Will the carbs from a CX work or should I stick with ones from a GL? I am thinking of buying a set and re-building like LRCXed has shown in another post.

I think the carbs from a CX are farther apart than the GL. I do know that for sure the intake manifolds (from the carbs to the cylinders) are different lengths. To switch back and forth, you will be exchanging parts.

Took it for a drive this morning and it was fine until it warmed up real good. Then started to stutter and wouldn't idle well at all. Limped home and it would periodically surge and be fine then back to bogging. I tested the stator when I got back and had over 13.8V after being connected for 10-15 seconds. I am thinking carbs, but you guys know these things a lot more than I do. Suggestions?
