Post subject:  I'm in.

Hi, all. Found a link to a post here on the other board.

As much as I'd like to have all the discussion in one place, I've been suffering major withdrawal whenever the other site goes down. So it's good to be here.

My extractor set arrived today, so some time this week, I'll be following Larry's procedure to remove and clean my slow air jets. I hope to have it done before the group ride in SE Minnesota on Saturday.

Hi Randall, and a big WELCOME to the board. It does cause withdrawal symptoms doesn't it!

What kind of extractors did you get? Before you do it, I want you to add something different to the procedure. After you rinse them off and blow them out so there are no gas fumes. Then tap the extractor in.Them hold a propane torch on the stack for 30 seconds or so and warm it up a little. Then turn the extractor in reverse first to set it in, then turn and pull at the same time. I think this will expand the aluminum housing a little to let it pop loose easier. It takes a bit of pressure to do it, but don't break the extractor in it. I already have one set on the way that it has happened to.
Let me know how it goes. Larry

Welcome Randal.
The other site is like a drug. Going cold turkey is a pain when it goes down for 2 days and you have a question on it or want to help someone else out.

And that's another reason I started this one.People can panic especially if they are new to the bikes and they see a forum is off-line especially if they are half-way through doing somehthing and they need support, actual or moral.

I found an NOS set of Alwin-Hanson spiral-fluted extractors on eBay for next to nothing. From some web searching, they seem to be good quality, professional grade tools, not the cheap imported junk.

Do you mean counter-clockwise (reverse of a normal drill), or reverse in relation to the normal direction of the extractor?

Thanks,

Well, Which ever way it would turn to insert it deeper into the jet! You twist it deeper in at the same time so it will grab harder while your pulling on it. When it reaches it's limit of the press fit, it will pop and come out. That's why you need to pull at the same time! So the extractor keeps biting into the jet for a strong hold. It's not like using it with a broken screw, where your trying to turn it gently to get the broken screw to start turning.
TWIST and PULL like H*#L

Tonight, I did a practice run my spare carbs (from an '81 Custom, I think.) No, heat, just some penetrating oil and some careful muscle. They were actually very clean.

I've found the insides of these spare carbs to be surprisingly clean, especially given the amount of dirt on the outside. I was tempted to swap them onto the bike tonight, but then I spotted the vacuum petcock port, which I don't have a plug for, and realized there are just too many unknown factors. Not something to do on a whim. I'll get them scrubbed properly and try them some other time.

I plan to do the slow air jet service on my installed carbs on Thursday evening. That should give me time to screw it up, and still get it on the road by Saturday.

Good practice Randall! Did you catch the notice I put up on the section I missed in the cleaning post? To me, its a biggy. I can't believe I missed it the first go around! It's lettered in blue here I think!

Yes, I saw it. I didn't go that far on the spares. I'll print off the whole thread before I start on the installed set.

Thanks,

Has anyone ever thought of an ultrasonic cleaner, I just did one of my wing carbs. You still have to disassemble them, but it cleans out all the little ports inside the carb body that are so hard to reach, really nice procedure on the idle jets though. I pulled them out of the wing carbs as well.
