CX500 GL500 650 Global :: View topic - Greetings from a new cx500 owner!!

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and actually new to any forum as I have never been part of one before. I just brought home my new project today, it is a 1979 CX 500 Custom that I got for a steal. I traded a 302 Mustang motor I had laying around for it even up. I will be on here a lot now as I have no idea where to start. It ran great last fall, new fluids, new spark plugs, new battery, and new air filter, the guy I got it from was driving it on a short trip and it all of a sudden locked up. Pretty sure the motor is seized, I have tried the moving it in 5th gear and turning the crank bolt and nothing gets it to turn over. I am a little mechanically inclined and thought tackling a rebuild would be a good summer project. Am I wrong in this? are they too hard to rebuild? are parts hard to come by? any info would be a great help! hope to be talking with you all soon, pics to come shortly!!

I'm guessing this is Mike from Allen Park? If you haven't been on the Chopper Charles site, check it out. I am amazed at the support there is for these machines. Everything you could possibly need help with is either here or there, or both, from people all over the world. Very friendly and informative. Good luck with your machine.

Welcome They are not that hard to re-build but of course you will most likely need a new crank and rods depending on the seizure.It would be better if you can keep your eyes out and source a decent 2nd hand running engine which are usually not that expensive.Then you could re-build/service the present engine at your leisure.This is the path I chose not long after getting my 1st CX which also seized.I now have two running CX and a spare running engine all of which I've re-built form the crank up. This has given me a deep knowledge of the power plants including the carbs.

I am already looking for motors to buy, I just need to keep the cost of this rebuild as low as I can, I have 2 young kids so my money is tight. I have another question which manual is better to get, Haynes or Clymer? Looking for one with better pics and detail of a rebuild.

I've never had a Clymers so can't speak for those but the Haynes is OK and if you need any more info just post.There are some downloadable ones around as well, http://drop.io/CX500_GL500 I'd strip the engine though as you never know you may be lucky with some of the parts and at least find out the cause.

I received a Clymer's manual from the guy I bought my GL500 from. I've found it to be pretty informative. I prefer the factory manual (don't have one for this yet), but even those leave quite a bit to the imagination sometimes. My son has one for his CB1000 Custom, and he sometimes learns more from just doing than to try to learn how in the manual.
