G'day folks. I've been on the AustralianCX forum for a couple of months now and didn't even know about this forum. It seems like there's some good info here so i thought i'd sign up, say hello and introduce myself. I'm also a member of the SR500 forum as i've got one of them that i've had for a few years that is getting a complete custom rebuild. A little under 2 months ago i bought a 1980 CX500 and have been trying to get it ready for rego ever since. There's been some roadblocks but i'm getting close. There's a link to my build thread here http://australiancx.asn.au/forum/index.php?topic=4864.0 The SR500 here http://www.sr500forum.com/forum/viewtop ... =15&t=1283 And a few youtube videos http://www.youtube.com/user/Staffyishere Feel free to say hello or ask for assistance if it's needed. Catchya all later. |

Welcome Staffy. This is the 2nd CX/GL forum I started after the old Swedish forum went down.It doesn't have a lot of conversations but I didn't start it as a ,"Chat" type forum(not that that is excluded) more as a repository for CX/GL and general motorcycle information.I didn't want the knowledge I have gained from my own spanner work and others from disappearing. I cannot stress how important correct and thorough carb cleaning and float height setting is.Very early on in my CX ownership I realized that I wanted my bike, like my cars,to start on the button on both/all cylinders.I kept reading these myths about how these bikes were known to fire on one cylinder and then next kick in.Within 3 months of ownership I had found and cured this problem with the above cleaning, balancing and setting up of the carbs and made my 1st web site with that information. I had read loads of theories about this bad starting like it's the engine design or the gravitational pull of the moon on the Earth<grin> Bad engine starting will cause premature engine and component wear.It puts a strain on the battery http://www.sheppola.karoo.net/TwistedTwin/BatteryCare.htm#BatteryCare Starter(Easy to service) http://globalcxglvtwins.hostingdelivered.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=208 and most importantly on these bikes the Starter Clutch mechanism. Some owners have also complained that they go through a lot of spark plugs. This is not an issue in my instance by using Iridium plugs, http://www.sheppola.karoo.net/TwistedTwin/Plugs.htm 15,000+ miles and going strong so have paid for themselves several times over.I've just been out to start my CX which has not been used for a week as I've been working out-of-town and she started on the 2nd button.I will forgive her as there's snow on the ground and it's -2 Deg C out there With the correct servicing and setting up there's no reason these bikes to act any different from any other well designed automotive vehicle. As for longevity I know for a fact there are blokes over there in Aus with over 200,000+ Klms on their CXs and they have not had a crank change or re-bore so easy general maintenance can give fantastic results. Pre-emptive oil changes(Before 3,000 miles) using cheap supermarket 10w40 or 15w40 made for diesel car oil and change the drive box oil(Hypoid 80/90w) the same time and change coolant every couple of years and adjust and service tappets and cam chain http://www.sheppola.karoo.net/TwistedTwin/CXGLTappets.htm#CXGLTappets and the bikes are very reliable and economical. Change the ATF in the forks for 20w fork oil for a superb ride. HTH |

Thanks Sheppola and Bandit for your welcome. I am planning on running 20weight fork oil first chance i get especially since i'll be putting a fairing on the bike, so that will change the damping dynamics a lot. I did plan on buying iridium plugs but they weren't there when i went to buy a bunch of other stuff so i just got the standard ones. I've since discovered i need a long tube 17mm socket to get the plugs out so i'll be going out and hunting down some iridiums at the same time. Do you have a link for a link to a thread which gives good advise on rebuilding a carb for the CX? |

Virtually every aspect is covered in it's own section, http://globalcxglvtwins.hostingdelivered.com/viewforum.php?f=19 |
