Hello from Bucks County Pennsylvania USA. I bought a 1983 GL650 Silverwing Interstate in somewhat cosmetically shabby but mechanically sound shape back in March and have been riding and fixing it up since. Here is a pic: ![]() Added highway pegs, rebuilt seat with gel insert and new cover, scraped and painted rusty spots on frame, changed fork oil to 20wt, changed all fluids and adjusted valves, balanced carbs, lubed cables, replaced grips, repaired broken fairing, re-routed cables and wires to proper locations, hard wired stator, greased splines on rear drive, etc. etc. and have ridden it nearly 2000 miles since March 15. Thanks to all who have contributed to the online CX/GL community and so generously shared their knowledge. |

Welcome aboard.Bike looks really nice. The 650s are what the 500s wish they were but then the parts for the 500s are easier to get so treat the engine like gold. With regular oil changes(And clean the sump and oil pump filter from time to time),tappet adjustments, coolant change etc the bikes are well capable of doing over 150,000 miles+ without problems.Just keep an ear out for tell-tale cam chain wear(Any unusual noises in the engine then investigate and fix). They are cheap to replace and a worn/stretched one is the single biggest cause of engine failure on these bikes and they don't cost a lot to replace. |
