Hello, guys. I'm here in the states in Richmond, VA. I just signed up on the site, the "choppercharles" forum is out of commission at the moment. I've been meaning to get on here anyway. I bought a '79 CX500 Custom about a week ago for $100 USD. It had been stored in climate controlled conditions for the last 28 years! Quite a long time to resurrect a sleeping CX. But I've done it before with other hondas and a '74 yamaha 175 enduro , and with the great condition of this bike I feel this one will be no different.
So far I have done the following:
-Bought "Clubman" bars for it and installed them.
-I have ordered "Pod" filters and two rebuild kits for the carbs, along with "Larry's" CX500 carb re-build guide. I'm sure you guys recognize those.
-I have taken the bike down to the stator and checked everything along the way, have ordered new "Honda" gaskets and have taken both cylinder heads off and inspected piston and cylinder wall condition. All so far have been in excellent+ condition, I have been fortunate. Every cover or part that I have disassembled has a brand new gasket and is cleaned and lubed beyond spec.
For the future:
-A solo chopper style seat with 4" springs.
-11" shocks on the rear.
-Copper head gaskets, custom made.
-Cleaned and "slightly" polished heads. "Not too much or it will break up the turbulence and cause the fuel to collect and run down the sides of the intake ports."
-Chopper/Bobber style rear fender that sits very close to the wheel.
-Headlight with integral speedometer.
-"Kreem" gas tank treatment, two part cleaner, one part re-sealer.
-Cafe racer style bar end mirrors.
-ETC., ETC., ETC.!
As soon as I fix the camera my son broke, or buy a new one. I'll have pics up, it will be a cross between a cafe racer and a chopper/bobber. I know that sounds like shit on a white horse, but when I'm done I think you will be surprised. Nothing gaudy, everything will be tastefully done and have a retro feel/look to it. I just want to go outside the box on this one. If it doesn't work out, it will be a nice "Moto Guzzi" style replica with a red frame and chrome body work. We will see, I'm hoping to get some input on what to do with this thing.
Hey, if you guys want, let me know what color to go with. Frame one color, bodywork another, give me some suggestions and pics if you want to. Give me a hand in bringing another beautiful CX500 back to life.
