CX500 GL500 650 Global

The Yellow wire sounds like some one has used something else attached to the bike.There shouldn't be any wires attached to the battery poles except the heavy duty Positive and negative feeds.

I get what you mean now about the ground wire to the frame.One of mine was attached by only a few strands so I cut it at the frame as it was too hard to get to.Then measured the length I would need and got and fitted one from an AutoZone type shop.They usually have them in varying lengths.I think it was about 13" but measure what you need and I attached it to a good point at one of the Regulator/Rectifier bolts to the frame.

You should be able to test the starter on a battery by putting the Positive wire from the starter to the positive side of the battery and grounding the back end bare part of the starter to the negative side.

If starter test turns out ok on battery test should I still take it apart?. Cheers for all the advice guess ill be busy this weekend.Conan

Even if the tests are good I would take it apart and clean it.It will most likely not have been apart for around 30 years.It's really not a hard job.Hardest part is getting the two long screws loose so soak with rust release/WD40 and use some heat on them and a wire brush to get any corrosion away from the threads.

Tested starter on battery and it worked,stripped it apart some rust on main inside body and the wire connected to the positive bolt has come away on the inside (will try solder it),also the bolt keeps turning in the housing so i cant get it out,the top piece seperated slightly from the rest .The motor turned by hand but not that easily.Any other advice would be great.Conan

If you can put your location and year and model under your Avatar or in a signature it would help as I can then point you to possible spares.I'm not sure which bolt you are referring to that is spinning?
If you need another Starter the good news is that they are all the same for all CX/GL 500 models and there's usually quite a few on Ebay.
The engines can be hardish to turn if they have good compression.There is a 17 mm inspection cover that allows you,once off,to put a 17 mm socket on the crank shaft and turn the engine for doing things like tappets etc,

The engines turn clockwise looking from the front.

It`s the bolt on the starter motor that takes the wire from from solonid its spinning on the inside when I try loosen the nut on outside and wire connected to it is not conected properly .The cx is 78 and has a gl 500 engine in it (not sure of year).I have access to a good starter motor from a cx 650 if that will fit.Im in Dublin Ireland.Conan

A 650 starter will fit but again open it up and check it
