Camshaft threads stripped, any fixes?

Postby Weevee47 » Sat Oct 10, 2009 11:30 pm

Had all sorts of probs with water pump leaks lately and just got the thing assembled once more WITH thrust washer in place this time. Problem is, the dome nut won't catch on the threads on the end of the cam. I have already run a die nut with a coarser thread on it as the original thread was stripped. Any suggestions ather than finding a camshaft with a good thread on it? I'm just about at my wits end with this thing.

Had one go on an engine. Not a lot you can do however it may be possible to use a die on it down to an M5 thread and then get an M5 domed nut and copper washer but use a good amount of silicone sealer around the hole and into it before you fit the copper washer and nut and let that set for 10 mins. Then put silicone gasket sealer over the nut and seal that as well.

The threads on these usually get worn by POs over torquing them. They are only meant to be 6 to 9 Ftlbs. They only need to be 6 Ftlbs if you also and should use Thread lock when fitting them. Then they can't come away until needed.I use the knuckle of my Wrench and socket and just decent hand tight, nothing more. With the above I think you will get away with it :)

Managed to get over this one Shep, the dome nut had an awfully long entry before the threads started and the first thread on the camshaft isn't too great either, so I looked out a couple of old dome nuts that weren't quite so bad and rubbed their faces on a file until the threads started right at the beginning of the nut. Used a slightly thinner copper washer too with a smear of silicone on the face and managed to get one nut on and tightened without too much trouble. Then I smothered the whole nut with silicone too and left it for a couple of hours to set before refitting the pump housing and adding water. Left it to sit for a good ten minutes....no drips, then started it and let it idle with a few handfuls of throttle now and then for another ten minutes.....no leaks, then gave it a run around the village and a gentle 60 mph couple of miles on the main road.....no leaks! Left it overnight with the oil draining just to flush the last of the mayonnaise from the crankcase and gearbox. New filter and oil in tomorrow and then a longer run. Gonna give it a run every day just to make sure all is well as it is due to do a 400 mile-plus run this coming weekend if all looks good.

Great. When you said,"Water" I hope you mean coolant or are going to fill with coolant? You can use Stock cheap car coolant. There's some people who think using advanced coolant will preserve the Mechanical seal but I'm doubtful of this.It does no harm to use the more expensive stuff but if you are on a budget or it's not available the just use the common or garden variety but I do my 50/50 mixes with Rain water/Distilled water as that does help stop furring of the cooling system. When I defrost my Fridge or Freezer I bottle it as well for this and battery top-ups :)

I've just been putting in water while the pump has been stripped and rebuilt so often, Shep. But now that it seems to be leak-free, I'll drain it again and put in a 50/50 mix. Our water is pretty good up here, there's very little in the way of lime etc in it because of the type of strata we have, mostly granite.
Had another short run yesterday, still looking good!

Great stuff.I can't see why it won't hold.I've seen a much worse bodge on a basket case engine I got off Ebay for spares.A PO had filed off the head of the domed nut, pressed it on and then tack welded it to hold the impeller and then blobbed a load of silicone sealer over it.Really rough but then they had also fitted the cam followers the wrong way round and the oil orifice jet in the heads upside down and they wondered why the engine got shagged.Complete numpties :o

Didn't get much time at it today, missus had me off shopping with her then had to take the dogs to the vet for their boosters. But started taking off the metal pipe on the side of the engine to try to cure this bloody drip it has from the O ring orifice. Ended up taking the thing right out, doubling the O ring (one on each lip of the pipe) and sticking silicone round the outside when it went back together. Hope it works this time!
Tell you what, I've never had anything to do with Cxes before and am well impressed with the engine, the way it pulls and the torque for a little 500 twin is just fantastic. Never had a trike before either, but 60 MPH cruising is a doddle on it.

Shep, just to let you know, the trike made it all the way to Dunbeath (200 miles) on Friday without any major problems, cruised at 60-65 all the way, occasional 70 when overtaking. Still an intermittenet dribble from the pump overflow but the radiator level had only dropped a little bit on the journey, it was still above the comb when I checked it on Saturday. Almost made it home yesterday but the throttle cable snapped, of all things, about 50 miles from home. Green Flag did their bit and got me here, but all in all it was a great experience, best run I've had in a long time and have to day am really impressed with the engine. Fantastic!
